Register Now for Emergency Text Messaging

In the event of an emergency, the City of Holladay will send text messages to pre-registered cell phones to communicate quickly with residents. Register now by texting "follow cityofholladay" to 40404. Please check with your cell phone provider as to the cost of text messages. The service is subject to the availability of cell phones and the Twitter service.

Registering for Reverse 911

In the event of an emergency, the Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC) has the capability to use Reverse 911 to contact residents. Reverse 911 is used to call out and deliver messages to telephones in specific areas. If you see “0000000000” on your Caller ID, answer the phone because it could be fire, police or the City calling with emergency information.

VECC requests that residents register their cell phones and Voice over IP phones (VOIP phones, such as Comcast Voice or Vonage) with their system to improve this critical service.

You can do so by going online to www.vecc9-1-1.com and clicking on VOIP Registration. The click on "New User" to create an account with the system and register your phones. This service is quick, free and secure. You will be asked to create a login and password in order to protect your information. This will make sure you don’t miss future emergency notifications

Education and preparedness are key to ensuring the safety and well-being of your family and yourself in the event of an emergency or disaster. CERT training offers opportunities to learn about the types of emergencies and disasters that are likely to take place in the Holladay area. It then teaches ways to make the necessary plans for yourself and your family should an emergency or disaster occur. Making an emergency/disaster plan for your home or business is just one of the simple steps you can take to help ensure that you are as prepared as possible when you need to be.

In a recent national survey conducted by The Ad Council, 80 percent of Americans agreed that taking some simple steps to prepare could help protect themselves and their families in the event of an emergency or disaster. However, only 58 percent had made an sort of emergency supply kit, developed a family emergency plan or learned more about potential threats; the three steps recommended by the Ready campaign (the Homeland Security’s program for preparedness). A survey of small businesses found more than 90 percent recognized the importance of business emergency preparedness. However, less than 40 percent said their company had an emergency plan in place.

There are several resources where individuals and businesses can learn how to prepare their families and workplaces for emergencies including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. Materials, including family communication plan templates and sample business continuity plans, are available providing Americans with the resources that will bring peace of mind.

Currently training courses are offered by two groups, the Unified Fire Authority and Avert. Classes are offered periodically by each group independent of the other. The City of Holladay sponsors these trainings when possible but additional classes are provided around the valley.
