The Masked Bandit       T

he City of Holladay is a fun place especially if you are a masked bandit.  By masked bandit we are talking about Raccoons.  They love Holladay; there are so many wooded areas, water ways, and great chimneys to nest in.

Because Raccoons are nocturnal not many people know that they are around, until they have created a problem.  Raccoons can create many problems while living in the city.  In early spring they find that chimneys that aren’t being used make great nesting spots.  Dog doors leading into the house make good doors for them also.  Raccoons can be very vicious and if cornered, they may come out fighting.  An average size raccoon (adults can weigh from 5 – 40 lbs.) can easily kill a cat.  Raccoons can also cause many other problems.

The Holladay/ South Salt Lake Animal Services can help with raccoon removal.  We offer trap rental for the residents of the city.  The fee is $50.00 refundable deposit for the trap and you have the trap for up to 2 weeks.  When you trap a raccoon you need to call the shelter at 483-6024 and we will have someone come and remove the raccoon from the trap.  The department of agriculture will also help and they can be reached at 975-3307.  If a raccoon has picked your chimney or other area in your house to nest there are other commercial companies that can help with removal also.
